Community Built

Possibility Playground WAS built by volunteers from the community using donated materials and tools in an old-fashioned barn-raising September 16-21, 2008.

In the space of six days, a small army of untrained but enthusiastic volunteers transformed the empty patch on Port Washington's bluff in Upper Lake Park into something magnificent: our universally accessible, community-designed and volunteer-built playground. Construction consultants from the playground's designer, Leathers & Associates, along with volunteer construction captains from the community, oversaw quality and efficiently lead hundreds of volunteers. Volunteers of all ages and skill levels worked side by side, and came and went their schedules permited, working anywhere from a few hours to all six days. Our food committee provided food and our childcare committee cared for children at the Port Washington Yacht Club to allow parents to participate.

THANK YOU!
We would like to thank each and every one of the thousands of volunteers and donors who helped make Possibility Playground a reality. Whether you helped in the beginning with fund raising or by purchasing items in support of the playground, or whether you donated food and beverages, skills, materials, elbow grease, child care or moral support, each of you played an important role. We can all visit our playground with a sense of pride knowing that we helped create a place where all children and adults of every ability can play. The entire journey, as well as the actual six days of building, have proven that Port Washington and the surrounding communities have a true spirit of community and a can-do mentality. It was a humbling experience and we are all the better for it.

Sincerely, The Possibility Playground Steering Committee:

Mardy McGarry, Sue and Jeff Mayer, Melissa Niemeyer,
Stacy Peters, Cindy Dasbach, Heidi Bertler, Liz Bannon,
Chris King, Sid Arthur, John Sigwart, Carol Lemke,
Samantha Williams, Cate Babcock, Susan Waldkirch,
Stacey Berg and Greta Schanen

ChildCare
Free childcare for children out of diapers to age 13 was provided at the Port Washington Yacht Club. Children ages 10 to 13 either assisted their parents with the build, or came to childcare. There were lots of fun activities, including soccer clinics, basketball clinics, dance workshops, music classes, and more.

The Port Washington Yacht Club
430 N. Lake Street,
is located south of the build site in the old Bath House in Veteran's Park next to the band shell.
